Cricket in India is more than just a sport; it’s a religion. And every now and then, a new star emerges who captures the imagination of millions. Abhishek Sharma, born on 4 September 2000 in Amritsar, Punjab, is one such prodigy who has taken the cricketing world by storm. With his explosive batting, handy spin bowling, and leadership skills, Sharma has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of the most promising talents in Indian cricket.
Early Life and Background
Abhishek Sharma was born into a
middle-class family in Amritsar, Punjab. His father, Raj Kumar Sharma, and
mother, Manju Sharma, have been his pillars of support throughout his journey.
The youngest of three siblings, Sharma grew up with two elder sisters, Komal
and Sonia. He completed his schooling at Delhi Public School, where his love
for cricket began to flourish.
शुभमन गिल का दोस्त और युवराज सिंह का चेला
Sharma’s cricketing journey is intertwined with that of his childhood friend, Shubman Gill. The duo used to open the innings for Punjab in the Under-14s, and their camaraderie has been a talking point in cricketing circles. Sharma’s talent was further nurtured by none other than Yuvraj Singh, the legendary Indian all-rounder, who coached him during the COVID-19 lockdown period.
Domestic Career: A Meteoric Rise
Under-16 and Under-19 Cricket
Abhishek Sharma announced his arrival on
the domestic scene with a century in his maiden match in the Under-16 Vijay
Merchant Trophy during the 2015–16 season. He amassed a staggering 1,200 runs
at an average of 109.09, earning the Raj Singh Dungarpur award for being the
highest scorer and highest wicket-taker (57 wickets) in the tournament.
He continued his dominance in the
Under-19 circuit, making his debut for Punjab in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy in
2016–17. Sharma’s leadership skills were evident early on as he captained the
India Under-19 team at the 2016 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup and in a one-day series
against England Under-19 in 2017.
First-Class and List A Cricket
Sharma made his first-class debut for
Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. However, it was in the shorter formats that
he truly shone. In the 2023–24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he led Punjab to their
maiden title, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer with 485 runs at an
average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 192.46. His performances included two
centuries and three fifties, showcasing his ability to dominate bowlers.
In List A cricket, Sharma etched his name in the record books by scoring the fastest century by an Indian, reaching the milestone in just 42 balls against Madhya Pradesh in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
IPL Career: From Delhi to Hyderabad
Abhishek Sharma’s IPL journey began in
2018 when he was bought by the Delhi Daredevils for Rs 5.5 million. He made an
immediate impact, scoring 46 runs off just 19 balls on his debut. However, it
was with the Sunrisers Hyderabad that Sharma truly flourished.
Since joining the Sunrisers in 2019, Sharma has been a consistent performer. In the 2024 IPL season, he scored the fastest fifty for the franchise against the Mumbai Indians and finished the tournament with 484 runs at a strike rate of around 200, including 42 sixes. His performances played a crucial role in taking the Sunrisers to the finals, where they narrowly lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders.
International Career: A Dream Debut
Abhishek Sharma’s international debut
came in July 2024 during India’s tour of Zimbabwe. He made an immediate impact,
scoring a maiden T20I century in just his second match. His knock of exactly
100 runs at the Harare Sports Club made him the fastest Indian batsman to score
a century in terms of innings batted.
Sharma’s ability to adapt to different formats and his fearless approach to batting have made him a valuable asset for the Indian team. As of February 2025, he has played 15 T20Is, scoring 371 runs at an average of 26.50, including two centuries and two fifties.
Playing Style and Strengths
Abhishek Sharma is a left-handed opening batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. His aggressive batting style, combined with his ability to bowl tight spells, makes him a genuine all-rounder. Sharma’s strength lies in his ability to take on bowlers from the very first ball, making him a perfect fit for the modern game.
